Day to Confront Racism 2024

In solidarity with the Springfield College legacy alumni and and the Asian Cultural Club, the Springfield College Division of Inclusion and Community Engagement is proud to again sponsor a “Day to Confront Racism 2024” on Thursday, March 21. This timely conversation will move beyond traditional conversations of race to examine the Asian American experience of racism in America.

The workshop will be held in person in the Cleveland E. and Phyllis B. Dodge Room (C-F), Flynn Campus Union starting at 11 a.m. and ending at 2 p.m. Note: Lunch will be provided beginning at Noon. Pre-registration is required.

Presented by Kimberly A. Truong, PhD
Chief Equity Officer in the Justice, Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion (JEDI) Office at MGH Institute of Health Professions

In this presentation, we will define race and racism in the American context. We will learn about Asian Americans as a racial group and how Asian Americans experience racism in the United States and in higher education. We will discuss how we can better support Asian Americans who have often been deemed “invisible” on our college campuses.

Kimberly A. Truong has more than 20 years of experience advancing justice, equity, diversity, and inclusion as a strategist and leader in education. Currently, she serves as chief equity officer at MGH Institute of Health Professions, a graduate school within the Mass General Brigham system. Truong has taught critical race theory at the Harvard Graduate School of Education for the past 12 years. She is founder and principal at XEM Consulting Services, LLC. Truong is nationally recognized for being a leader in the equity in education space, both as a researcher and administrator. Truong conducts research on justice and equity issues in higher education, university student experiences, and higher education policy. Her written works have been published in journals and on websites, such as the Harvard Educational Review, Inside Higher Ed, Diverse Issues in Higher Education, Insight into Diversity, and Journal of Diversity in Higher Education.

Following the lecture, the Springfield College Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion Awards will be presented to an outstanding student, employee, and Springfield community member. The awards recognize those who have made a significant contribution to diversity and inclusion on campus or in the Springfield community.

This event, presented by the Division of Inclusion and Community Engagement, is free and open to the Springfield College community and the public. It is partially funded by the Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion Fund.
