In part, this is because they are difficult to measure and isolate from larger muscles in the lower legs and feet. However, through technology advancements and accessibility to clinicians, such as real-time ultrasound imaging, wireless electromyography (EMG), and strength measurement devices, we are now better able to explore these muscles.
