SUMMARY:Being a Beacon: Promoting LGBTQ+ Inclusivity within the Health Professions and Beyond
DESCRIPTION:Presented by David Shapiro\, MD\, MHCM\, FACS\, FCCM\nTrauma Surgeon\, Physician Executive\, and Educator \nJoin us for a meaningful presentation by David Shapiro\, MD\, MHCM\, FACS\, FCCM\, a thought leader in trauma\, injury prevention\, and in advocacy\, who also helps to lead LGBT2SQI+ inclusion in the health professions and beyond. Upon his entrance to the medical field\, Shapiro recognized that it was neither a diverse nor a welcoming place for providers or patients. Stereotypes and tradition were impediments to him – an aspiring surgeon who was also empowered to not hide his membership in the gay community. He made a commitment to self: in addition to advancing his surgical career and the care of injured people\, he was also going to advocate for his own community within the health professions and professional schools. \nIn the ensuing decades\, Shapiro has become a national leader in the campaign for inclusion within the health sciences. In this realm\, he introduced the concept of the beacon to the milieu of mentorship and sponsorship within the health professions. This event will focus on his experience as a breaker of barriers\, opener of doors\, but also as a beacon to let folks know the path. Attendees will learn how emerging professionals can become beacons in their chosen fields. \nA question-and-answer session will follow the lecture. \nDavid S. Shapiro is a well-known trauma surgeon\, physician executive\, and educator. He was the chief medical officer and vice president for medical affairs at a Level I urban trauma center and is a leader within multiple organizations. Shapiro was the founding advisory chair of the Association of Out Surgeons and Allies\, a nonprofit dedicated to empowering LGBTQ+ surgeons and trainees to pursue their careers and engage allies. He currently is the American College of Surgeons Committee on Trauma chair for the state of Connecticut\, served as president of the American College of Surgeons Connecticut chapter\, and was the Society of Critical Care Medicine Northeast chapter president. He spent seven years as the editor‑in‑chief of Connecticut Medicine. He has also published a book\, titled After the ICU\, a multiprofessional perspective on recovery from critical illness. \nThis event\, co-sponsored by the Social Work and Social Justice Club and the Honors Program\, is free and open to the Springfield College community and the public. \nIf you have a disability and need a reasonable accommodation to take part in this event\, please contact Andrew Schoolnik at aschoolnik@springfield.edu as soon as possible to discuss your accessibility needs.

SUMMARY:Reading by Author Jennifer Bannan
DESCRIPTION:Fiction writer Jennifer Bannan will read from her new story collection\, Tamiami Trail: Miami Stories (Carnegie Mellon University Press\, 2025)\, named for the road that connects Tampa to Miami. The Tamiami Trail cuts through the contradictions of Miami: a city shaped by swamps and skyscrapers\, violence and desire. In her stories\, Bannan brings us vivid portraits of women navigating this teeming\, volatile landscape. Elaine Chiew of Foreward Reviews writes\, “Clinging to their tangential morality by way of a mystical sense of place\, the characters in Tamiami Trail are flawed and full of want. Their grasping opportunism contrasts with the ineffable honoring of place and myth\, thus revealing their naked humanity.” Tamiami Trail: Miami Stories was included in the Best of October 2025 by the Southern Review of Books and was named a finalist in the Eyelands International Awards. \nA Q&A and book signing will follow the reading. \nThis event is free and open to the Springfield College community and the public. \nJennifer Bannan’s latest short story collection\, Tamiami Trail: Miami Stories (released in fall 2025)\, has received excellent reviews in The Library Journal\, among other publications. Her first collection\, Inventing Victor\, was published in 2003 by Carnegie Mellon University Press. She has had stories in the Autumn House Press anthology\, Keeping the Wolves at Bay\, and in literary journals\, including the Kenyon Review online\, ACM\, Passages North\, Chicago Quarterly Review\, Exposition Review\, Eclectica Magazine\, and more. SUMMARY:"Americanish" Film Screening and Q&A
DESCRIPTION:Join us for a screening of Americanish followed by a Q&A with writer and producer Aizzah Fatima. \nWelcome to America: Where dreams come true…ish. A break from the traditional romantic comedy\, Americanish highlights different layers of womanhood as they intersect with cultural and societal expectations. Americanish invites viewers into the home and lives of three marriage-aged women as they navigate the often-turbulent waters of romance\, culture\, career\, and family. We follow the joys and tribulations of career-driven sisters Maryam and Sam Khan\, and their fish-out-of-water cousin Ameera. Set in Jackson Heights\, Queens\, New York\, the film follows a relatable and endearing storyline\, offering a fresh perspective on classic rom-com tropes. Americanish delves into the complexity of trying to both honor and break from cultural traditions while balancing personal values and career goals in a society that does not always accommodate both. \nCheck out the trailer. \nAizzah Fatima is an award-winning filmmaker\, actor\, playwright\, comedian\, and ex-Google engineer. She starred in\, produced\, and wrote the feature film Americanish\, which won 25 awards at festivals\, including jury awards for Best Lead Actress\, Best Narrative\, and several audience awards. Learn more about Fatima at aizzahfatima.com. \nThis event is free and open to the Springfield College community and the public. \nIf you have a disability and require a reasonable accommodation to participate in this event\, please contact Donna Croteau at dcroteau@springfield.edu as soon as possible to discuss your accessibility needs.

SUMMARY:Philosophy and Religion Spring Forum
DESCRIPTION:Life Has Meaning: But You Need to Testify!\nPresented by Jason Burke Murphy\, PhD\nAssistant Professor of Philosophy at Elms College \nEveryone always has a reason to “bet” on life being meaningful. We should “bet” that life is worth the risks and the certain trouble it poses\, even if we have no evidence at hand. Once someone “bets” on life\, they must develop the skills to find what matters. We turn to culture\, society\, and friends to testify to what has worked for them. All of us can appreciate other people’s searches for meaning\, even if we do not share important common beliefs. Crises of meaning are a source of solidarity\, and they are a feature of living well. \nJason Burke Murphy\, PhD\, is an assistant professor of Philosophy at Elms College. He is a fellow at the Centre for Global Cooperation Research at the University of Duisburg/Essen. \nThis event is free and open to the Springfield College community and the public. \nIf you have a disability and require a reasonable accommodation to participate in these events\, please contact Wendy Franz at least two weeks before the event at wfranz@springfield.edu or (413) 748-3646\, to discuss your accessibility needs.

SUMMARY:Artist Talk and Reception Featuring Visual Artists Valerie Lyons and Adam Viens
DESCRIPTION:Please join us for an Artist Talk and Reception featuring artists Valerie Lyons and Adam Viens \nThe William Blizard Gallery presents two concurrent exhibitions that explore perception\, meaning\, and presence in a world defined by transience – Not All Birds are Blackbirds by Valerie Lyons and The Ethics of Ambiguity by Adam Viens. The exhibitions run from March 2 through April 3. \nTogether\, Viens and Lyons lean into intuition as a mode of practice. Viens engages silence as structure through large-scale abstract paintings that suspend resolution and resist the overproduction of meaning. Lyons offers sculptural and sonic works that move through light\, shadow\, and care—acts of witnessing where perception itself becomes devotional. In the context of a college gallery\, these exhibitions take on particular resonance. They invite students\, faculty\, and the wider community into a shared space of inquiry where art becomes both reflection and experiment. By foregrounding intuition\, both artists resist the demand for fixed answers\, instead modeling how creative practice can cultivate attentiveness\, ambiguity\, and relational understanding. Placed side by side\, the exhibitions move through the complexity of contemporary life—between human and natural\, reason and intuition\, spirit and form. Art here becomes a pedagogical act as much as an aesthetic one: a meditation on how we remain present amid uncertainty\, transformation\, and change. \nArtist Talk begins at 3:15 PM\, followed by a Reception from 4:00-5:30 PM

SUMMARY:The 11th Annual Tom Waddell Symposium for Sports and Values at Springfield College
DESCRIPTION:It’s No Joke\nHow athletes and teams need to support each other to build community \n\nSpringfield College alumnus and former U.S. Olympian Tom Waddell ’59 was a champion of inclusion. He believed that sports—for all its inherently competitive nature—could be a unifying force. Indeed\, he lived his brief life with a conviction that sports could\, and should\, help to build community. \nOf course\, it doesn’t always work that way. Oftentimes\, sports serve as a wedge\, rather than as a bridge. Even at moments of triumph\, such as the recent gold medal victories by the U.S. women’s and men’s hockey teams in Italy\, we have seen where the sports culture can be used to divide\, rather than to unite. \nAt Springfield College\, competitive athletics are part of who we are—but through our Humanics philosophy\, we strive to make sport a powerful driver of connection and community. This year’s symposium brings that vision to life\, featuring a dynamic conversation with Women’s Basketball Head Coach Naomi Graves and Men’s Basketball Head Coach Mike McClendon. Also\, student-athletes from both teams will share how they are building a culture of mutual support. The event will also spotlight innovative efforts across the Department of Athletics that are strengthening community and redefining what it means to compete—together. \nAt the conclusion of the program\, one current Springfield College student-athlete will be recognized as the recipient of the Tom Waddell Leveling the Playing Field Award\, given annually to someone whose off-the-field commitments have helped build a more just society. \nThis event\, presented by the Division of Campus Life and Community Engagement and the Department of Athletics\, is free and open to the Springfield College community and the public. \nFor more information\, please contact the Division of Campus Life and Community Engagement at campuslife@springfield.edu or (413) 748-3101. \nSupported by the Dr. Tom Waddell ’59 Fund.\nFind Out More About the Fund or Make Your Gift
