Springfield College is committed to implementing proven strategies to improve the diversity of its faculty, staff, and students. We not only want to have faculty who reflect our diverse student body to serve as mentors and role models, we also want their help in preparing our students for leadership in service to others in an increasingly diverse world. We all need ongoing development and education to prepare ourselves and our students for a diverse world. Privilege and unconscious biases impact our ability to be equitable and just in our work.

Given the moral imperative to increase the diversity of faculty, we want to help search committees recognize unconscious bias and prevent it from entering the search and hiring process,as well as provide actionable advice and tools that will help search committees recruit diverse pools of candidates who are committed to justice and equity in the classroom. To that end, we are encouraging all faculty members to attend one of the sessions that will cover the following:

·       Unconscious bias in the search process,

·       How to evaluate diversity statements from candidates, and

·       Advice for building diverse pools of candidates.

Each session will feature presenters Martha A. Potvin, PhD, provost and vice president for academic affairs; Rachel Rubinstein, PhD, dean of the School of Arts and Sciences; and Calvin R. Hill, PhD, vice president for inclusion and community engagement, for this exploration of how our unconscious bias can impact our decision-making in the search and selection process.
