Latinx Dance with David Olarte
David Olarte is a social Latin dancer who performed and taught salsa for the past 20 years, both nationally and internationally, with the Seaon “Stylist” Dance Company and as director and founder of Stilo Dance Company. Members of Stilo Dance represented the United States at the 2013 World Latin Dance Cup, placing third in the Salsa Team Division. As an Arizona State University (ASU) graduate student, he broadened his movement vocabulary to create a unique Latin fusion style while researching pedagogical frameworks that investigate transformative community practices. Members of Stilo Dance recently performed at Jacob’s Pillow Inside Out festival in 2017, work that integrates a multidisciplinary approach towards social performance while bridging various communities. Olarte is currently a clinical associate professor for the ASU School of Film, Dance, and Theatre, teaching Latinx social dance forms and supporting the student goals towards developing the salsa community on campus. He’s currently pursuing a PhD in theatre performance of the Americas and researching where social dance lives within our communities.
