Constitution USA with Peter Sagal: Created Equal – Viewing and Q&A with Ian Delahanty, PhD

Sep 16, 2024 12:00 pm - 1:15 pm

Constitution Day Celebration 2024
Presented by the Department of Humanities and Social Sciences

Join us for a viewing of the third episode of a four-part PBS series on the Constitution. The “Constitution USA with Peter Sagal: Created Equal,” episode highlights “how the high ideals of the Declaration of Independence that ‘all men are created equal’ didn’t make it into the Constitution in 1787. It took three-quarters of a century, and a bloody civil war, before the Fourteenth Amendment of 1868 made equality a constitutional right and gave the federal government the power to enforce it.”

In the series, Sagal travels cross country on a Constitution-designed Harley-Davidson to explore “where the Constitution lives, how it works, and how it unites us as a nation.” Sagal is the host of the popular NPR news quiz Wait Wait…Don’t Tell Me!

This event commemorates the September 17, 1787, signing of the U.S. Constitution. At Springfield College, we believe it is important to remind students, and our campus community, of this significant event in our country’s history. In addition, every educational institution that receives federal funds for a fiscal year is required to hold an educational program about the U.S. Constitution for its students. Thanks to Humanities and Social Sciences for fulfilling this requirement each September.

A Q&A period with Associate Professor of History Ian Delahanty, PhD, will follow the screening.

This event is free and open to the Springfield College community.
