Springfield College, in collaboration with Amherst College, will host a virtual seminar by scholar and author Joy DeGruy on her book, Post Traumatic Slave Syndrome. DeGruy will share how the book addresses the residual impacts of generations of slavery and opens discussion of how the Black community can use the strengths they have gained in the past to heal the present.

Joy DeGruy, PhD, is a nationally and internationally renowned researcher and educator. For more than two decades, she served as an assistant professor at the Portland State University School of Social Work, and now serves as president and chief executive officer of Joy DeGruy Publications Inc. Her research focuses on the intersection of racism, trauma, violence, and American chattel slavery. She has more than 30 years of practical experience as a professional in the field of social work. DeGruy holds a Bachelor of Science in communication, a Master of Social Work, a master’s degree in clinical psychology, and a PhD in social work research.

This free event is open to students, faculty, staff, and alumni.
