The idea of disposability is a noticeable feature of our society, with critiques emanating from theories related to education, globalism, and capitalism. In plain language, disposability culture describes a wide range of issues that occur for the sake of convenience, without thought on future impact. Recent trends suggest that disposability is a clear path to engagements that pose an existential threat to movement and health for youth. Specific attention to this issue will touch on the following topics:

  • An overview of recent cultural forces that drive bias and prejudice towards children
  • Attention to rules in “the new city” through perspectives of spatial literacy and youth geographies
  • How intersectional perspectives could be utilized to combat a growing crisis of ambivalence towards youth in movement endeavors
  • How curriculum in kinesiology programs can be reformatted through a cultural equity framework to assist future professionals

This event, presented by the Springfield College School of Physical Education, Performance, and Sport Leadership, is free and open to the Springfield College community and the public.
