Life Has Meaning: But You Need to Testify!
Presented by Jason Burke Murphy, PhD
Assistant Professor of Philosophy at Elms College
Everyone always has a reason to “bet” on life being meaningful. We should “bet” that life is worth the risks and the certain trouble it poses, even if we have no evidence at hand. Once someone “bets” on life, they must develop the skills to find what matters. We turn to culture, society, and friends to testify to what has worked for them. All of us can appreciate other people’s searches for meaning, even if we do not share important common beliefs. Crises of meaning are a source of solidarity, and they are a feature of living well.
Jason Burke Murphy, PhD, is an assistant professor of Philosophy at Elms College. He is a fellow at the Centre for Global Cooperation Research at the University of Duisburg/Essen.
